Een VVD’er legt een ander niets op. Die houdt van zijn vrijheid en gunt de ander hetzelfde. Daardoor heeft het lidmaatschap van de VVD veel weg van het lidmaatschap van de sportschool. Als je er niet zelf naartoe gaat, als je niet iedere week opnieuw met je tasje en je handdoek op de fiets stapt, merkt alleen je bankrekening het. Er komen amper mails, een handvol nieuwsbrieven. Een VVD-lid moet het doen met de Liber.
De Liber is een maandelijks partijblad van ouderwetse allure. Inleiding door de voorzitter, een samenvatting van de standpunten van Kamerleden en fractievoorzitter. De rubriek ‘Daarom’, die het waarom van VVD-standpunten uitlegt. Over Nederland: “We trekken ons niets aan van partijen die besmuikt lachen als Halbe Zijlstra zegt dat hij niet wil dat paaseieren voortaan verstop-eieren heten. We zorgen liever dat Nederland hetzelfde bijzondere land blijft als het was.”
‘De hobby van’
Maar de Liber heeft ook een heel feestelijke kant, achterin het blad. ‘De hobby van’. Over wat ministers en Kamerleden in hun vrije tijd doen. Die vertelt dat Europarlementariër Hans van Baalen een treinenman is, dat oud-minister Ivo Opstelten zijn hart verpandde aan het roeien, dat Kamerlid Anoushka Schut-Welkzijn graag hardloopt.
Het is een leerzame rubriek. “Roeimaten hebben geen geheimen voor elkaar”, zegt Opstelten, die na zijn ministerschap twee keer per week de Rotte op en neer gaat. Schut-Welkzijn tipt: laat nooit iemand je zeggen dat iets onmogelijk is. Bij haar scheurde tien jaar geleden een knieband. Men zei dat sporten er niet meer in zou zitten. “Tegen mij moet je dus niet zeggen dat iets nooit meer mogelijk is.” Binnen het jaar liep ze haar eerste halve marathon.
Kamerlid Jeroen van Wijngaarden maakt zijn hoofd leeg op de mountainbike. “De behoefte om met zijn vriend Karst op deze manier de wereld te zien, is bijzonder sterk”, noteerde de Liber-redactie. Deze zomer fietst hij in Italië. Ook Sander Dekker, de VVD-staatssecretaris van onderwijs, fietst. Hij was altijd al een fanatiek wielrenkijker, maar toen hij twaalf jaar geleden zijn vriendin Marieke ontmoette kocht hij een eigen racefiets. “Wielrennen staat voor mij voor vrijheid!”
Harige Harry en de ladyshavers
Kamerlid Betty de Boer is liefhebber van boten. Aan het Groningse Reitdiep woont ze met echtgenoot Feike. Betty hoopt op strenge winters. Als er ijs ligt, is dat het enige moment dat de raampjes aan de buitenkant gezeemd kunnen worden. Kamerlid Arno Rutte – geen familie – is frontman van rockband Harige Harry en de ladyshavers. Nu hij opgroeiende dochters heeft, treedt hij nog maar een paar keer per jaar op, maar in ieder geval op de kerstborrel van de VVD-fractie.
Het zijn ontboezemingen waaraan mijn plaatselijke VVD-afdeling nog niet is begonnen. Die stuurde na zeven maanden een eerste mail. Afgelopen voorjaar startte VVD-voorzitter Henry Keizer grote veranderingen. De VVD moet opener, zegt hij. Zelfs niet-leden zijn voortaan welkom. Keizer zal nog wat werk moeten verzetten om zijn partij mee te krijgen. Want de keerzijde van vrijheid is natuurlijk onverschilligheid, en zie die maar eens te voorkomen.
